The hospital was four stories tall. My room was on the second story, and Spencerâs the third, with the emergency room on the first floor. The lobby looked more like a modern art museum than the entrance to a hospital. There was a lot of money there, and without Lucy and Harryâs hand-out, I would never have seen West Side Hospital. It was how the other half lived, and I was grateful that if I had to get my appendix out, at least it was in a fancy shmancy place where I was getting the finest care.
It was now eleven oâclock, and the nurses were changing shifts quietly because most of the patients were sleeping. Spencer and I got some weird looks as the couple in matching hospital gowns, me pushing his chair up and down the hallways. But nobody bothered us while we peeked into every open door. It wasnât the most thorough of searches considering most of the doors were closed up for the night, but we looked into enough rooms to feel defeated.
There was no sign of Mrs. Friendly.
It was looking more and more like I had lost my mind.
âYou havenât lost your mind,â Spencer said, reading my thoughts. âYou were just trippinâ off some good pharmaceuticals.â
I didnât tell him that I had only been given saline in my IV, and I didnât think saltwater could make me hallucinate. âIâll take you back to your room,â I said, crestfallen.
Just as I lost all hope, the man who had been walking down the hall with his legs wide apart while I was with Mrs. Friendly came walking toward us in the hallway. He looked exactly like he had before, pushing his IV bar, walking toward Spencer and me with his legs wide apart and still in obvious pain.
A witness. My hope returned to find Mrs. Friendly.
âOh my God. Oh my God,â I said. âHim! Him!â
I rocked back on my heels and pushed the wheelchair forward, running down the hallway toward the mystery man with his legs wide apart, as if he had elephant balls or some kind of problem with his crotch.
âYou!â I said, reaching him. He averted his gaze and lowered his head, like he was a movie star and I was a mob of paparazzi. Maybe he was shy, I thought, or maybe he really was a movie star. I studied his face, but he wasnât any movie star I recognized.
âRemember me?â I asked.
âYes, sure. Hello. My doctor wants me to walk. Good night.â
He tried to shuffle around me, but I pushed Spencerâs wheelchair in front of him, blocking his path. Skidding to a halt, Spencer almost fell out of the chair but managed to right himself with his one good hand.
âTell him about the old lady I was with,â I urged the man.
âWhat?â
âThe old lady. Mrs. Friendly. Sheâs vanished. Disappeared. Come on, letâs go to security. Maybe the policeâ¦â I shot a look at Spencer, and he flinched. âOr the FBI. We probably need to call the feds, in case she was kidnapped.
